battle of spotsylvania
In May Confederate forces clashed with the advancing Union Army in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. This lasted about 2 weeks and ncluded some of the bloodiest fighing during the Civil War. Union troops broke the Confederate line, but the rebels managed to close the gap and hold their ground. The battle which had 18,000 Union and 11,000 Conferate caualties.On May 21, Grant disengaged his troops and ordered them to continue their march south toward the Confederate capital of Richmon
The Siege of Petersburg
The Siege of Petersburg was not just one battle it was many battles around the cites of Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia. These 1861 battle started June 9th and ended March 25 1865 during the Civil War.after the unsuccessful attack of the city of Petersburg by Ulysses S. Grant, Grant then built trenches around the eastern part of Richmond to the outskirts of Petersburg. Robert E. Lee, who finally abandoned the city in 1865 and retreated, which led afterward to his surrender at Appomattox Court House. The Siege of Petersburg continues to be known as an early example of trench warfare.
